The Coach House

Frome
English Country Cottages:   5 star
Cottage's own web site
Set within the beautiful grounds of Stonnwall Manor Estate, completely secluded behind tall hedges and stonewalls, some dating back to the 17th century. Its own private entrance via automatic gates, a gravel driveway sweeps round to the stable yard.

Stone walls draped with tapestries, whilst the other side is timber-clad, its barn doors replaced with a long line of French doors. This allows this huge room to be extended onto a sun terrace revealing an ancient well. Polished flagstone floors, chandeliers hanging from old roof trusses and oil paintings add a lovely warm resonance. Chesterfield sofas are positioned around an inglenook fireplace cleverly concealing a flatscreen TV. To the amazement of guests a crackling log fire appears at the flick of a switch. The dining area hosts a medieval style table. An arch leads into a farmhouse-style kitchen with 6-burner range cooker and wall-to-wall modern granite style worktops.

Upgraded, all internal partitions have been painstakingly clad with delightful tapestry paneling. It maintains all its rustic charm yet features the latest technology such as digital keypad entry, communal rooms which automatically light up on entry, and a central dimmer which optimises the mood. All Double bedrooms boast 5ft four-poster beds, wooden floors and en-suite shower rooms.

Entrance is via a gabled porch into the lobby. The under stairs cupboard contains a folly with doll-size period furniture. The balustrade staircase opens onto a galleried landing with chandelier and window seat overlooking the magnificent 400-year-old trees. All chambers contain period style furniture, exposed beams and clean oak laminated floors.

Ideally set to the west of the medieval market town of Frome, which has the most listed buildings in the county, The Coach House sits within a Local Preservation Area. Local attractions include Stonehenge, Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury, Bath, Stourhead and Longleat Safari. Pub 100yds.
