ALLONBY COTTAGE

Divider-Cream-o93pfx6hqn138hc8n8xz0crka6mdas2f9tsg1tyy7e Home

Welcome to Allonby Cottage, a delightful holiday cottage situated on the sea front in the village of Kippford. Our beautiful cottage sleeps up to seven people but has the flexibilty to offer cosy comfort for a couple or plenty of space for a family. It has wonderful, uninterrupted views over the Urr Estuary, the boats moored on the water and the hills beyond. The picturesque little village of Kippford has all you need for a wonderful holiday; beautiful scenery, good food and plenty to do.

Allonby Holiday Cottage is ideally located for nearby beaches, sailing, mountain biking, golfing, walking, fishing or simply relaxing by the sea. We have a large selection of leaflets and information in the cottage of local attractions for a wide range of things to do within a walk, cycle ride or short drive of the cottage. Lizzie is also always happy to help with any planning or ideas of things to do so please ask.

Kippford is also the ideal location to explore the South West of Scotland. Within easy reach there is an inexhaustible supply of National Trust properties, RSPB reserves, family activities, historic sites, stunning coastal and hill scenery and bustling market towns to explore.

Kippford is a no through road so only those “in the know” or those happening upon it know of its tranquil and beautiful location. If you turn right out of the front of the cottage you walk down to the Solway Yacht Club and Mariner and Anchor Pubs. If you turn left you pass the lifeboat station and can either stop at the Ark shop for an ice-cream or turn left up the brae towards the Jubilee Path over the headland to Rockliffe. By continuing to walk along the front you come across a series of small beaches that are ideal for wiling away a few hours.

The cottage was built originally in 1896 and was  simply a “two up and two down.” The Kippford front and Allonby Cottage were clearly photogenic back then and feature on many post-cards through the years. We think it kept its original shape until 1975, when a local doctor purchased it, added the large kitchen, a further bedroom, a workshop and re-directed the stairs. We’re reliably informed that dynamite was used to blast out the Kippford granite to clear room for the kitchen! Allonby Cottage has kept a delightful and large garden to the rear that gently slopes, making it suitable for children.

Ground Floor

Kitchen

The shaker style kitchen is at the rear of the cottage and faces onto the garden. It is a good size and has a dining table and chairs. There is also a gas hob, with electric oven, fridge/freezer, microwave and dishwasher. The kitchen is very well equipped, including a highchair, children’s plates, bowls and cutlery. We try to make the cottage a home from home by including many of the useful things a kitchen shouldn’t be without.

Sitting Room

The bright sitting room looks over the estuary. It has a comfy sofa, a couple of arm chairs and two large beanbags to relax in. As well as the central heating there is an electric “wood burning stove” so you will always be cosy. There is a TV with DVD, a selection of books and games for those quieter days when you just want to stay in and relax.

Shower/Utility Room

To the rear of the ground floor there is a utility room with washer/dryer and space for coats, boots, etc. The utility room has a separate shower that is ideal for those staying in the downstairs bedroom or when coming in from a days walking or sailing.

Porch

To the front of the cottage is a porch or as it is known in Scotland a ‘Sitooterie’, which looks out over the Kippford waterfront. It is the perfect place to sit and watch the world and wildlife go by with your morning coffee or maybe enjoy the setting sun at the end of the day with a glass of something chilled.

Bedrooms

Downstairs Bedroom

This bedroom is at the front of Allonby and has beautiful views over the estuary and hills beyond. It has a comfortable double bed and fitted wardrobe. This bedroom has easy access to the downstairs WC and shower room making it ideal for a couple to stay in.

The double bedroom upstairs at the front of the house has one of the best views over the seafront and Galloway hills . It has a comfortable double bed, chest of drawers, built in wardrobe and chair to sit by the window and watch the world go by.

Bedroom Two

Also upstairs at the front of the cottage the twin room has lovely views over the seafront and hills. It has two single beds and a chest of drawers.

Bedroom Three

A cute, smaller bedroom with views to the back garden. It has a single divan bed with headboard. The bedroom has a built in wardrobe with hanging space and shelves.

Garden

Back Garden

The large back garden at the rear of the cottage is laid to lawn and gently slopes up towards the woods behind. It is an ideal garden for children to run around in and have great fun playing in the wendy house. There is garden furniture and a BBQ set – great for easy self catering. You can still see the boats moored on the water when sitting in the garden.

Front Garden

The front garden is granite gravel with the occasional shrub planted here and there. It is surrounded by a low wall with an opening onto the road. The view from the garden is beautiful and provides a perfect place to sit at the garden table and watch the world go by.

Parking

There is room for two cars on the road outside Allonby Cottage, generally you will be able to use one or both of these. Occasionally these are taken by other visitors to Kippford but there are plenty of other roadside spaces up and down the village including some designated parking bays a little further down on the otherside of the road. You will usually find that you can move your car back to outside Allonby by the end of the day anyway. If you arrive and there is nowhere for you to park initially to unload no-one seems to mind if you just double park for a while to drop stuff off.
