Leave the A1 at junction 62. Take the A690 east to Sunderland. Approx 1 1/2 miles along, turn left into West Rainton( look out for the brown signs directing you to Finchale Priory, you will be traveling the same road ) take the next left and follow that road for approx 1 mile. This will take you over a small railway bridge and then round a quite sharp right turn. At the end of the village turn left. Follow this country road over the A1 flyover, it will bare sharply right approx 500yds after the row of houses, you will then pass the golf course on your right hand side and then the road bares sharply left. Approximately 1/2 mile along that road you will see a layby on your left. Immediately after the layby you will see Cocken Cottage on your left hand side, turn in through the wrought iron gates.
