Leave the A1 at Junction 49 signed posted A168 Thirsk:
Follow this road for about 8 miles, past signs for James Herriot Country, following signs for Scarborough A168. Turn off this road at the York A19 turnoff.

At the roundabout take the 2nd exit sign posted for Thirsk / Scarborough A170. Follow this road to the next roundabout and take the 3rd exit sign posted for Scarborough A170 and Sutton Under Whitestonecliffe. Follow this road, which takes you up Sutton Bank -a very steep hill (1 / 4). Keep going straight on, following this road into the village of Helmsley. Drive through Helmsley and at the roundabout take the 3rd exit following the same road through the next villages Beadlam and Nawton.

Keep going straight on (for about 3 miles) and eventually you will come to a village sign posted Kirkbymoorside, at the roundabout go straight across. Follow the road, past the fire station on the left for about 1 mile until you see a brown sign for Ryedale Folk Museum -you need to take the next turning on the left sign posted for Hutton-Le-Hole (the sign post is not marked very clearly). Follow this road for about 2 miles, which brings you into the village.

Greengate Cottage is almost at the end of the village past The Crown Pub on the right and just past Merrill's shop on the left. The cottage is accessed down a track across common land on the right hand side. Please park your vehicle at the back of the cottage following the tracks on the left, remembering to close the gate behind you!
